Background of the study
Multimodal communication—integrating text, visuals, and audio—has become increasingly essential in translation projects, particularly in dynamic digital contexts. Nigerian Pidgin, as a widely spoken lingua franca, is often used in multimedia translation projects to enhance cross-cultural communication. Translators working on Nigerian Pidgin projects incorporate not only linguistic translation but also visual and auditory elements to convey tone, humor, and cultural context (Adamu, 2023). Such multimodal approaches aim to bridge the gap between source texts and target audiences by using a combination of images, symbols, and sound cues that resonate with diverse viewers. This approach is particularly effective in social media, advertising, and educational content, where engaging multiple senses can significantly improve message retention (Ibrahim, 2024). However, challenges such as synchronization issues, varying cultural interpretations of visual elements, and technical limitations can hinder the overall effectiveness. This study examines various Nigerian Pidgin translation projects that employ multimodal strategies, assessing their effectiveness in delivering cohesive and culturally resonant messages. The research includes case studies, surveys of audience response, and interviews with translators to identify best practices and challenges in integrating multimodal elements.

Statement of the problem
Despite the advantages of multimodal communication, Nigerian Pidgin translation projects often face difficulties in harmonizing textual, visual, and auditory elements. Inconsistencies in multimedia integration can lead to miscommunication and dilute the intended message (Adamu, 2023). Technical challenges and differing cultural perceptions of visual symbols further complicate the translation process (Ibrahim, 2024). These issues can result in fragmented communication that fails to fully engage the target audience. This study aims to identify the key challenges in multimodal translation projects and evaluate the overall effectiveness of current practices in Nigerian Pidgin, thereby providing recommendations to enhance the integration of diverse communication modes.

Objectives of the study:

  1. To evaluate the effectiveness of multimodal strategies in Nigerian Pidgin translation projects.
  2. To identify challenges in integrating multiple communication modes.
  3. To propose recommendations for improved multimodal translation practices.

Research questions:

  1. How effective are current multimodal approaches in Nigerian Pidgin translation?
  2. What challenges arise from integrating text, visuals, and audio?
  3. What strategies can enhance multimodal communication?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it evaluates multimodal communication strategies in Nigerian Pidgin translation projects, offering insights for translators and media professionals. Enhanced multimodal practices will improve message clarity and cultural resonance in digital communication, thereby broadening the reach and impact of Nigerian Pidgin content (Adamu, 2023; Ibrahim, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to Nigerian Pidgin translation projects that incorporate multimodal elements and does not extend to traditional text-only translations.

Definitions of terms:

  • Multimodal communication: The integration of multiple forms of media to convey information.
  • Nigerian Pidgin: A creole language used widely in Nigeria for informal and formal communication.
  • Translation projects: Initiatives aimed at converting content from one language to another.
